The Girls JV and Varsity basketball teams both won big last night against Sioux Center. The Varsity squad is ranked in 5A, sitting in the 12th spot. During halftime, the colorguard showcased a beautiful performance with high color flags. The colorguard is a rising activity through EHS and we enjoyed watching the performance last night. Raider Nation, come out and support the girls tonight, for their senior night with the boys regular game to follow against Tea. Show your raider spirit and wear a jersey!! See MoreSee Less

EAST HIGH TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Jacob Mattoon on being East High’s 2026-27 Teacher of the Year. Mr. Mattoon is full of energy and determination, readily taking on new tasks and engaging positively with students. He co-teaches ELL classes with several different preps, serves on the BLT, and embraces challenges whenever needed. For several years, he supported the NASA Club, taking students on trips to compete and showcase their science skills. He is also involved in taking students to the Morningside Smart Competition. Mr. Mattoon volunteers in the community as a Scout Master and is, in fact, an Eagle Scout himself. He has a quick wit and an agile mind, which he often applies to lightening the mood and solving problems.

The students love Mr. Mattoon as a teacher. They enjoy being in his class because he is able to connect with them via his teaching style. He keeps class engaging and fun with activities like his Smores Lab, which is a favorite at East High. Mr. Mattoon cares about his students, and they know he cares.

Mr. Mattoon is upbeat and positive, always finding the silver lining in any situation. Students and staff respect him deeply and value his insight. His dedication and determination are admirable. He is a joy to work with and be around.

As the culinary classes finish up their dessert unit this week, they held their annual cupcake wars competition. Lots of unique cupcakes flavors were baked and the judges had a hard time choosing their favorites. Groups not only had to make their own cupcake creations, but they had to build their own posters advertising their flavors. Thanks Mrs. Bunce and Ms. Flannery for making this great competition! Below are some of the creative ideas our students brought to life. See MoreSee Less

In Mr. Vega’s Class earlier this week, they did a Flame Test Lab. During the lab, students would put metal ions in such as Lithium, Copper and Sodium. Students had fun putting on the lab coats and safety glasses before mixing and matching ions to make different colors. Thanks to Mr. Vega for letting students take photos during this teaching.
